While many vintage and preloved clothes can be snagged for a bargain price there are some very special pieces that hold historical and sentimental value to collectors. Here are 3 of the most expensive vintage Beatles’ T-shirts sold that make even the most luxurious modern designer T-shirts look cheap!
John Lennon’s ‘Home’ T-shirt
John Lennon, the famous guitarist of the Beatles’, was close friends with the creator of a New York City based restaurant called ‘Home’ which opened in 1971. When the restaurant opened Lennon was gifted a T-shirt adorning the ‘Home’ logo which he went on to wear to many of his shows and TV performances. Fans fell in love with the design and when John Lennon’s personal ‘Home’ T-shirt went on sale it was purchased for $16,000!
The Beatles’ ‘Yesterday & Today’ T-shirt
When the Beatles released their album ‘Yesterday & Today’ in 1966 they pushed to use a rather gruesome album cover known as the ‘butcher’ as a statement protest against the war in Vietnam that was happening at the time. Their recording label rejected the idea to begin with but eventually allowed the cover to be used on some albums and T-shirts.
Soon after launch they went back on that and quickly took the ‘butcher’ cover albums and T-shirts off the market and replaced them with a much more subtle album cover, making any merchandise sporting the original artwork very rare! One of these sought after and hard to find butcher cover T-shirts sold to a collector not too long ago for $20,000.
Nike x Beatles ‘It’s a Revolution’
Not only is this T-shirt extremely rare, it also has a very interesting backstory which surely contributed towards the value when this shirt was sold at auction for $50,000…
In 1987 Nike ran an advertising campaign using the Beatles’ song ‘Revolution. The band were not pleased with this and opposed the use of their song in the ads, but by this point they actually had no say in where the song was used. This is because in 1984 Michael Jackson bought the entire Beatles back catalogue for $47,500,000 giving him the rights to all music they had made up to that point!
Eventually the commercial along with all related merchandise was pulled from the shelves which made these ‘It’s a Revolution’ motif T-shirts incredibly hard to find. The backstory paired with the rarity of these items made the perfect combo for collectors hence the $50,000 price tag!
Fortunately, not all vintage T-shirts are as expensive as the ones we looked at today, but it is mind blowing to see how historical and sentimental values can skyrocket the price of T-shirts that once would have sold for no more than $10. What do you think of these collectors’ tees? Worth the price or a terrible purchase?
