With our fast-paced fashion industry, there is a never-ending supply of new clothes being pushed into the spotlight. However, demand and competition for these clothes push retail prices down. As a result, fast throw-away fashion has become increasingly popular.
With polyester fibres and other materials taking hundreds of years to biodegrade, throw-away fashion is hurting our fragile planet. We’ve destroyed deserts, you only have to look at the 39,000 tons of clothes dumped yearly in the Atacama desert. As well as waste unprecedented amounts of water. It takes 7,500 litres of water to make a single pair of jeans.
Knowing this, it is obvious why the fashion industry is the second-largest polluter in the world. It is also why here, at Eileen’s vintage clothing we support the return of pre-worn wearable clothing to the market. Wearing more of what is already here, is a start to ending fast throw-away fashion. It is also a start to helping save our planet and the effect the fashion industry has on it. And finally, let’s be honest it’s pretty awesome wearing that one-off piece of vintage clothing, that suits you down to the ground.
